History
Stephen B. Johnson Sr. and his wife Myrtle founded Johnson’s House of Flowers in the summer of 1919 in Montrose, Colorado. Family-owned businesses in the small towns and cities of pre-World War II America were the backbone of local commercial economies. These businesses made it through the hard economic times because their owners sacrificed greatly to keep their doors open. Johnson’s House of Flowers is a survivor because of hard work and dedication. Mr. Johnson was excited to move his operation from Montrose, Colorado to Grand Junction, Colorado and opened the doors on Main Street February 14th, 1937 (Valentine’s Day).

Stephen Sr. and his son Stephen Jr. built a shop with greenhouses in 1940 just outside of town on a small two-lane dirt road. This dirt road was the main road from Grand Junction to Palisade and had very little traffic. Today this road is called North Avenue, and it is the most traveled road in the Grand Valley. We are proud to be the oldest business on North Avenue.

The shop you see today was built in 1982 just in back of the old shop, which was torn down after the new one was finished.

Incorporated in 1978, the tradition of the family operated business continues. Stockholders now own the business, but exclusively family members own all stock in the corporation. In June of 1988 the oldest daughter of Stephen B. Johnson Jr., Betty and her husband Richard Emerson, joined the business and became the third generation of husband and wife partnership. Today JHOF continues to carry on the family tradition with the fourth generation, Lori Emerson and Jennifer Quarles, working to keep their Great-Grandfather's dream alive.
